This Week in Pro-Choice News

Brought to you by Lauren Kuhlik

Right-wingers apparently don’t know how to use google: Republicans who can’t distinguish between medical sadism and reproductive health care have complained that “the media” haven’t been paying enough attention to the Gosnell trial.  I won’t describe in detail all the horrible things that this Philadelphia doctor has been accused of in regards to his illegally operated abortion clinic because it’s actually been all over the news, so I’m sure you’ve heard about it.  Even national feminist sites such as Jezebel and Feministing have covered the case extensively, which the reporters and politicians who are outraged about the media silence could have figured out with a few seconds on their nearest computer machine.  We need to remember that the horrible procedures that happened at this Philadelphia clinic will become de rigueur if anti-choicers continue to curtail women’s access to safe, legal reproductive health care. [New York Times]

Mississippi’s only abortion clinic will stay open…for now: Mississippi passed a restrictive new law that would require abortion providers to have admitting privileges at a local hospital.  This would have shut down the only clinic that offers abortion in the entire state.  A federal judge has ordered the state not to revoke the clinic’s license until after a federal lawsuit that would determine the constitutionality of afore-mentioned law is settled.  Still, all is not well in Mississippi.  Women must undergo a waiting period and are required to be told, among other things, that abortion increases their chance of breast cancer.  Abortion is the only medical procedure before which doctors are required by law to lie to their patients.   [Politico]

Virginia.  Oh, Virginia: Do you remember when Virginia passed legislation requiring transvaginal ultrasounds before abortions, and then all the craziest Republicans across the country lost their election races?  How about when Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli compared anti-choicers to abolitionists?  How about last week when Delegate Bob Marshall argued that pregnancy never threatens the life of the mother?? Well, now the Virginia General Assembly has voted to place new restrictions on abortion providers, similar to ones that passed last year in Mississippi.  This would effectively close down many abortion clinics and prevent new ones from opening.  We can only hope that the current wave of anti-choice nonsense will prove as detrimental to their electability in 2014 as it did in 2012. [Washington Post]

Iowa Republicans can only accomplish their agenda if they use fraud : Voter fraud is extremely rare.  A study in Wisconsin, for example, found a voter fraud rate of less than one thousandth of a percent.  So new, stricter voter ID laws aren’t actually preventing the fraud.  What are the laws doing? They ensure that Republicans get elected by preventing the poor, minorities, legal immigrants, and other reliably Democratic groups from voting on election day.  Iowa Secretary of State Matt Schultz argued for the importance of the new laws because without them, Republicans won’t accomplish anything else, including limiting reproductive rights.  Because they won’t get elected.   [Think Progress]

“If babies had guns, they wouldn’t be aborted”: Texan Representative Steve Stockman, apparently thinking himself the height of hilarity, has argued that if fetuses had access to guns they wouldn’t get aborted.  This is so bizarre that I honestly can’t make fun of it.  I’m just going to put it out here so you guys can share in my confused silence.  [Christian Science Monitor]

New Hampshire State Representative calls women “vaginas”: Peter Hansen argued that a “solitary male” might be able to retreat from an intruder without violence, but if children or vaginas were present, then one would have to use a gun to protect them.  Sometimes it’s almost nice to see Republicans admit so openly that they view women as their reproductive organs.  [ABC]
