This Week in Pro-Choice News

In case you needed more proof that rape culture exists: A principal in a Michigan high school discouraged a rape victim from filing charges against her rapist because a criminal record might have prevented him from playing at a Division I school.  You know what might have done a better job of not preventing him from playing college basketball? Not raping anyone.  This story, along with that of Rehtaeh Parsons, who committed suicide after she was viciously bullied when she reported her rape, shows just how poorly we treat rape victims, even young ones, in our society.  Excuse me, I have to get into an argument with some Men’s Rights Activists now.  [Think Progress]

California might expand women’s access to abortion!!: Assembly Majority Leader Toni Atkins is proposing a bill that would allow nurse practitioners, nurse midwives, and physician assistants to perform abortions up to 12 weeks.  If this bill becomes law, then women in counties without abortion providers will be able to make choices about their reproductive health without worrying about having to travel to another county.  It’s almost like abortion is a legal medical procedure that women should have access to! [Business Week]

And then on the other hand, Minnesota: The Minnesota House recently passed an amendment to a budget bill that would require abortion providers to pay a steep yearly fee and get inspected often.  One step forward, two steps back, America.  At least the bill is unlikely to pass easily in the state senate, which has fewer anti-choice Democrats.  [San Francisco Chronicle]

120px-LeftHand_2Everyone Internet high-five this awesome high school student: A public high school in West Virginia has hired a vomit-inducing “sexual purity” speaker who lies and shames high school students about their sexuality.  Katelyn Campbell spoke up against the damaging misinformation, and her principal threatened to call Wellesley, where she will go to school this fall, and tell them that she has bad character.  Wellesley responded by tweeting “Katelyn Campbell, #Wellesley is excited to welcome you this fall.”  The high school has admitted that they should screen their speakers more carefully.  Go hug a Wellesley alumna and redouble your support for comprehensive sex education!! [Think Progress]

Shocking news: men and women same species: Evolutionary psychologists, terrible writers, and pretty much every unfunny person you know are wrong.  Men and women differ in traits more among themselves than between the groups.  Basically, “men” taken as a group are no more or less caring, aggressive, or horny than “women” taken as a group are.  Men and women are all over the map on how much they possess these different traits, but one thing is certain: actual science, the kind that makes Republicans melt like the Wicked Witch in The Wizard of Oz, shows that sexist ideas and policies are absolutely not based in any kind of fact.  [NY Times]
